Hello again! Let me share an experience to highlight why being proactive and diligent in your immigration journey is essential.

I met with one of my clients in preparation for her Post-Graduation Work Permit (PGWP) application.  During her studies, she had to take a leave for medical reasons. She was proactive, informed her school, and made sure that she would return to the classroom in less than 150 days. The school assured her verbally that she could take the time off. However, they did not issue any official letter or documentation confirming this authorization.

When applying for a PGWP, the onus is entirely on the applicant to prove that they have complied with the terms and conditions of their status. This responsibility is even more crucial at a time like this, when the government’s goal is to reduce the number of temporary residents in Canada. Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) will not show any leniency- you need to submit a complete and strong application.

What happened to my client? Thankfully, she was proactive and had enough time to request a letter from the  school confirming the authorization for her medical leave before it was time to submit her application.

This experience underscores a critical lesson; YOU are the central figure in your immigration journey. While institutions are there to support you, the ultimate responsibility of gathering and retaining the right documents lies with you. Here are some tips I would like to share:

  1. Seek Professional Guidance

My client avoided a big headache just because we had a quick chat, and I suggested she  go back to her school and ask for a letter of authorization.  Don´t hesitate to reach out. Contact someone qualified to guide you through the process. And don´t wait to the last minute.

  1. Always Get It In Writing

Emails, letters, or even texts- any form of written communication can serve as evidence. Think about this; you need to have supporting documents for each statement you present in your application to IRCC. After all, what is a statement without proof?

  1. Familiarize Yourself With Your Obligations

Make sure you understand your obligations and the terms and conditions of your status. This includes rules around full time enrollment and working. Remember, knowledge is power.

Remember, your immigration journey is uniquely yours, and being an active participant can make all the difference. If you need guidance or support, don´t hesitate to reach out.
