Hello!
Many believe that once they receive an acceptance letter from a Canadian academic institution, their Study Permit is automatically approved.
But that is far from the truth!
The reality is, there is an entire process that applicants must go through—and mistakes can lead to a denial.
Key Requirements for a Successful Study Permit Application
To get approved for a Study Permit, you must:
✔️ Submit a complete application
✔️ Prove that you will leave Canada after your authorized stay (this is where proof of ties to your home country comes in)
✔️ Demonstrate sufficient financial resources, including the source of those funds
But today, I want to focus on a critical factor that many applicants overlook—the choice of study program—and why this matters so much.
Case Study: Denied Study Permit Due to Choice of Program
(Kianizadeh v. Canada (Citizenship and Immigration), 2025 FC 464)
A recent applicant applied for a Study Permit but was denied and later applied for judicial review.
Applicant’s Profile
- Education: Bachelor’s in Scientific and Applied Architecture + Associate Degree in Architectural Drawing
- Work Experience: 3 years as an Architectural Designer
- Intended Study Program: Architectural Technician College Diploma
Despite her relevant background, the judicial review was denied because the immigration officer believed that her proposed studies were redundant and the applicant did not adequately address this concern.
Her study plan simply stated:
“The practical approach of the program aligns with my career trajectory and will help enhance expertise in various essential domains.”
This was too vague and did not justify why she needed this program.
How to Avoid This Mistake in Your Study Permit Application
To prevent a refusal like this, your Study Plan must be clear, detailed, and strategic. Here’s what you should include:
1️⃣ Explain How This Program is Different from Your Previous Studies
- Compare the curriculum of your previous program and the one you are applying for.
- Use specific examples and course syllabi as supporting documents.
2️⃣ Highlight Why This Program Interests You
- What specific skills or knowledge will you gain?
- How does it complement your previous education and work experience?
3️⃣ Show How This Program Will Help You Back Home
- Explain how this new knowledge will open up better job opportunities in your home country.
- Demonstrate how these new skills provide a competitive advantage in your local job market.
4️⃣ Use the Study Plan to Reinforce Your Eligibility
- Your Study Plan should clearly explain why this program makes sense for your career goals.
- This is not about writing a dramatic story—it’s about presenting all the facts in an organized and logical manner.
-
The goal is to make it difficult for the officer to say no.
A Study Permit refusal can set you back months or even years. The best way to avoid this? Submit a strong, well-structured application that leaves no room for doubt.
